What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old health care system…

Ayur means life , Veda means knowledge. It is the knowledge of life. Utilising tools similar to ‘like attracts like’ ‘opposites attract’ and the elements, Ayurvedic medicine is a powerful, insightful healthcare system that sees the human as a whole dynamic energetic being. The emphasis is on prevention and making lifestyle and seasonal changes that have profound effects on health and wellbeing.

Ayurveda sees the human as a whole, so it addresses physical, mental and emotional states. Furthermore it is holistic and seasonal.

According to Ayurveda, the five elements of nature (space, air, fire, water, earth) are present within the human. These five elements are categorised as three components (doshas) known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The doshas relate to specific functions of the body. A balance of these doshas is thought to be required for optimal health. This is known as tri-dosha theory.

  • Air and Space represent Vata. Vata controls muscle and joint movement, breathing, and heartbeat. Vata controls the emotions such as anxiety, fear, pain, and other functions of the nervous system.

  • Fire and Water represent Pitta, controlling such bodily functions as digestion, metabolism, intelligence, and skin colour. Pitta governs the emotions of anger, hate, and jealousy.

  • Earth and Water represent Kapha. The physical structure of the body and the immune system are governed by Kapha. Emotions include calmness, forgiveness, love, and greed.

Most people are a combination of two pre-dominant doshas and the dosha is determined at conception. It can also determine physical build. Vata people tend to be thin and have brittle bones, Pitta people have athletic bodies with muscular tone and Kapha are larger in bone structure and tend to keep weight on. Nevertheless, no matter what your dosha is, you can always find harmony and balance using Ayurvedic Medical Philosophy.

Ayurvedic medicine utilises lifestyle changes through diet, exercise, stress management (yoga, pranayama and meditation) and targeted herbs to achieve optimal balance. Check out our Store for Quality Ayurvedic Supplements. AYURVEDIC PHARMACY

Targeted treatments of panchakarma are a major component of detoxification. Panchakarma known literally as the 5 actions are a major detoxification program for the mind, body and emotions. It uses 5 major detoxification channels to eliminate toxic substances from the body. This toxic substance is known as Ama which builds up over time in the body and settles deep into the tissue layers of the blood and body. Once this Ama accumulates, a host of disease builds up. Without removing this toxic sludge, the patient rarely improves. This is the reason why Ayurveda states that a removal of Ama and a reset of the gut microflora, metabolism and digestion are the primary focus of health and wellbeing. Secondly, herbal therapy helps to regulate the body systems and balance the doshas as necessary. Thirdly, lifestyle changes are adhered to, and an implementation of yoga, diet and stress management takes effect. This daily routine is known as dinicharya. There is also a night time routine.

The person needs to address triggers and toxins and eliminate these from the deep tissues in the body before embarking on a herbal plan. This can have profound effects on the body and mind. (*note that toxic substances can also be in the form of toxic relationships and thoughts, not just food)
