Ayurvedic UTI Support Protocol & Recipes

Ayurvedic UTI Support Protocol & Recipes

A UTI is seen in Ayurveda as an imbalance of Pitta and Apaan Vayu (a sub-dosha of Vata responsible for downward flow and elimination), often with signs of heat, burning, and irritation.

Core Supportive Herbs & Teas:

  • Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris): The premier Ayurvedic herb for the urinary system. It is a diuretic, cooling, and soothing tonic for the entire tract. Take as a supplement or as a tea.

  • Coriander Seed Tea: A powerful cooling diuretic.

    • Recipe: Boil 1 tsp of coriander seeds in 1 cup of water for 5 minutes. Strain and sip throughout the day.

  • Aloe Vera Juice (Inner Fillet): Cooling, healing, and anti-inflammatory for the mucous membranes. Take 2 oz in warm water each morning.

  • Barley Water: A classic, cooling demulcent that soothes burning sensations.

    • Recipe: Boil 1/4 cup of pearl barley in 4 cups of water for 45-60 minutes. Strain and drink the water throughout the day. You can add a pinch of turmeric and coriander powder.

"Soothe & Flow" UTI Relief Drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp fennel seeds

  • 1 tsp coriander seeds

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

  • A few fresh mint leaves

  • 4 cups water

  • Honey to taste (add when warm, not hot)

Method:

  1. Bring water to a boil. Add all spices and mint.

  2. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

  3. Strain into a thermos. Add a small amount of raw honey once the liquid is warm, not hot.

  4. Sip this thermos-full throughout the day. It is incredibly cooling, diuretic, and calming for the entire system.

Dietary & Lifestyle Guidelines for UTI:

  • DO:

    • Hydrate with room-temperature or warm water. Sip constantly to flush the system.

    • Consume cooling foods: Cucumbers, coconut water, cilantro, fennel, zucchini, leafy greens.

    • Take probiotics to support healthy flora.

    • Rest. The body needs energy to fight infection.

  • AVOID:

    • Pitta-aggravating foods: Spicy, sour, salty, and fermented foods (vinegar, pickles, alcohol).

    • Sugar & refined carbs: They can feed pathogenic bacteria.

    • Caffeine & alcohol: They are irritating and dehydrating.

    • Holding urine: Empty your bladder completely and frequently.

Lakshmi Harilela
I was cooking since I was 12 years old, alongside my late Father, Mohan Harilela. My family ran restaurants, so I was always sneaking into the kitchens and eating everything I could get my hands on. Since a very young age, I have always had a passion for food, as I was constantly surrounded by it. So I decided to go to Hotel Management School Les Roches in Switzerland for some formal education.
